celebrating art and beautiful friends

On Wednesday of our week in Indy, we took Warren to the Indianapolis Children’s Museum, the best children’s museum in the world.  And lest you think I am being hyperbolic, it shows up on Google lists as number one.  There are dinosaurs escaping the building outside as you enter….life-size dinosaurs!  There is a large locomotive and a fully operating carousel in the building, and outdoors there is a 7.5 acre sports experience, featuring areas for playing any kind of sport: basketball and tennis courts, soccer and football fields, hockey, racing, mini-golf and the Centennial Ferris Wheel.  Warren could have spent hours playing in the mirror maze alone.  Both times I have taken one of my grands to this museum we stay five to six hours, and they forget to eat!

On Thursday we planned something special because of Warren’s interest in ceramics.  Our dear friend in Kokomo, Steve Bayer is a potter and a retired middle school art teacher.  Hearing about Warren’s love of ceramics, he and his wife Nancy, also an exceptional artist in many media, invited us to lunch and to make ceramic masks.  We learned how to make clay from the dirt under our feet and then Steve walked us through the creative process of fashioning a life-sized face from clay.  Once our project was complete, Warren donned rubber boots and accompanied Nancy to the creek on their property where they waded and collected fresh-water clam shells and a few golf balls that had ended up in their creek after a flood had brought them from a nearby course.  We are so blessed to have many friends like Steve and Nancy…friends we can count as the best friends ever!

Love, Liz
