When planning each of the trips we take with our grandchildren, we take into account their unique proclivities. Warren is easy. He likes almost anything! One of the things I knew he would love was sleeping in a train car. And the Crown Plaza-Indianapolis Downtown-Union Station has 26 bedrooms in vintage train coaches. Upon arrival we moved into our adjoining rooms. Warren spent fifteen minutes mastering how to open his door with his own room key.
One disappointment was that the Crown Plaza has taken out their swimming pool. What is it with hotel pools? Driving across the country with Campbell every pool was a bust…too cold, too slippery, chlorine powder floating on the surface. Here in Indy, we have access to the YMCA pool a few blocks away. But honestly, we’re not going to have much time. Our dance card while we are here in my hometown is very full.
At lunch in South Bend Warren had asked me about the house where I grew up. As we drove downtown, it was early enough that I thought it would be fun to drive by the house I lived in when I was Warren’s age. Then we went by my grade school, and Warren played on the playground, trying out every piece of equipment. We even danced across the US map singing the state names in alphabetical order ala “Fifty Nifty United States.”
We were off to a great start, and it hadn’t even been a full day.
Love, Liz
